What made me stop.

Food, hands at work, and a busy morning in Tsukiji. Being a cook makes me pay attention to what’s happening on both sides of the counter.

Markets are one of my favorite places to bring a camera. There’s food everywhere, people working, and something happening in almost every corner.

These photos are from Tsukiji. I wanted to keep a little of the food, the faces, and the light I saw there.

IF YOU’RE HEADING THERE

Plan your visit.

Tsukiji Outer Market is still a place to shop and eat in Tokyo. For a visitor’s morning, aim for 9am–2pm, check the market calendar and individual shops, and leave space for people working. The wholesale tuna auction moved to Toyosu; it isn’t part of this walk.

Getting there

The market association lists roughly 1 minute on foot from Tsukijishijo Station on the Oedo Line or Tsukiji Station on the Hibiya Line, and 3 minutes from Higashi-ginza. These are walks to the market edge; your chosen shop may be farther inside.

A walk to try.

Check the day’s openings first, then allow 2–3 hours to browse, take photographs and sit down for a meal.

  1. Tsukiji Outer Market · around 9am

Begin when the association’s public shopping window starts. Keep delivery and buyer routes open.

  2. The smaller market lanes

Browse food stalls, dried ingredients and kitchenware. Ask before photographing a shop.

  3. Tsukiji Uogashi

General visitors can shop in the wholesale area after 9am. Check the businesses you want to see.

  4. A seated meal

Leave time to sit down. Toritoh’s chicken ramen is one option; you’ll find its menu and prices below.

Tsukiji and Toyosu are different visits

The wholesale market moved to Toyosu in 2018. Tsukiji’s Outer Market stayed. Come here for the shopping streets, ingredients, restaurants and people working around them, rather than expecting a tuna auction.

If watching the wholesale market is your priority, plan Toyosu separately. Some viewing areas and closer observation access have their own arrangements; check the official visitor information instead of assuming a Tsukiji morning includes both.

Come for the visitor hours

The Outer Market association sets out 6–9am for professional buyers and 9am–2pm for public buyers, with later hours depending on the shop. General shopping in Tsukiji Uogashi’s wholesale area starts after 9am unless you have advance permission.

Many shops close on Sundays and some Wednesdays, but there isn’t a rule that every shop shuts on every Wednesday. Check the calendar and then the individual business. The market calendar represents wholesale-market business days, so it isn’t a promise about every Outer Market storefront.

What does a meal cost? A real menu example

Toritoh’s Tori Soba Stand publishes shoyu or shio chicken ramen at ¥1,150, a karaage side at ¥420 and a karaage set at ¥1,000. The stand is listed in Uogashi Shokudo on the third floor at 6-26-1 Tsukiji.

Its posted hours are 7am–2pm, closed Sundays, public holidays and market closure days. Prices vary widely around the market, so read each menu before joining a line. You don’t need to turn breakfast into a checklist.

Look beyond the busiest food queue

The official market directory also covers dried bonito, seaweed, tea, pickles, knives and kitchen utensils. Leave time for those shops if you’re interested in cooking. A market visit doesn’t have to be a race between the most photographed snacks.

As a cook, I pay attention to the hands and the work as much as the plate. That’s the thread running through my photographs here. Get permission before photographing a shop, and step aside when someone needs to get through.

A few things to know.

Is Tsukiji Market still open?

The Outer Market is still operating. The former wholesale market relocated to Toyosu in 2018; the two places serve different visits.

What time should a tourist visit Tsukiji?

The association identifies 9am–2pm as public buyers’ hours. Earlier hours prioritize professional buyers, and each shop’s opening days still need checking.

Can I walk around eating and taking photos?

Ask before photographing a shop and respect prohibition signs. Eat inside or in the designated space by the vendor, rather than blocking the lanes.
