Enoshima: a train ride, a sea breeze & the last of the light
Bicycles by the water. Palm trees along the road. A little more sky in every frame.

What made me stop.
A green train. Bicycles by the water. A lane with the sea at the end of it. These are the bits of Enoshima I brought home with me.
There’s more sky in these photographs. Pink clouds above the river, palm trees along the road, the light reaching between buildings. I like how different it feels from the city at night.
One of my favorite frames is someone watering flowers outside a shop. A small thing happening while everything else carries on.
Plan your visit.
Give Enoshima an afternoon if you want to walk the coast and island without rushing. Arrive early enough for the climb to Samuel Cocking Garden and the Sea Candle if they’re on your list, then leave time beside the water. The island has stairs; the paid Escar helps with the ascent and runs upward only.

Getting there
Katase-Enoshima on the Odakyu Line, Enoshima on the Enoden and Shonan-Enoshima on the monorail are different stations. The Sea Candle operator lists approaches of about 20, 25 and 26 minutes respectively, continuing across the bridge and up through the island with the paid Escar. Allow longer when walking the stairs or stopping along the way.
A walk to try.
An afternoon outline with room to stop. Check the weather and the day’s attraction hours before deciding how far to climb.
The station & coastal streets
Take time on the way from the train. This part of the visit is in the photographs too.

Take the small train toward the sea
The Enoden is a ten-kilometre railway between Kamakura and Fujisawa. It passes coastal views and local streets, with Enoshima along the line. Transportation IC cards are accepted.
If you’re already spending the morning in Kamakura, the train gives you a way to connect the two places. Keep the afternoon loose. A few stops and a slow walk can be enough.

Let the streets lead you toward the water
The photographs here are full of little openings: a lane toward the sea, bicycles by a railing, palm trees and a pink sky above the river. There’s room to enjoy the place before buying an attraction ticket.
Try a walk along the public coast before crossing to the island. Keep any stop for food where the shop allows it, and leave the narrow lanes clear. If the light is good, it’s fine to stay with one view for a while.

Go up if you want the wider view
The Sea Candle is the observation lighthouse inside Samuel Cocking Garden. The operator’s normal hours are 9am–8pm, with last admission at 7:30pm; events can change them.
Tower entry is ¥800 for an adult. The garden is free before 5pm; when an evening event is running, leaving the garden after 5pm requires its separate night admission. Read the ticket choice before going in if you plan to stay into the evening.
Plan for the way down as well
The Escar covers the upward climb in three sections. The full adult ride costs ¥500, and it doesn’t bring you back down: the descent is by stairs.
The operator’s normal Sea Candle Set Ticket bundles the Escar and tower at ¥1,100 for an adult. That bundle doesn’t cover an applicable evening garden fee. Choose it for the things you want to do, and check the night option if you’re staying for the lights.

A few things to know.
Are Enoshima and Kamakura the same place?
They’re different places connected by the Enoden railway. You can combine them in a long day, but each has enough walking and photographs to fill a slower visit.
Does the Escar take you back down?
No. It travels upward only. Plan for stairs on the descent.
Can I stay for the winter lights?
When the seasonal event is running, yes. The Jewel of Shonan guide has the announced season dates and the night-ticket choices. Check the event page for the latest lighting hours.

Memories
you can wear.
I photographed Astro Boy in a Kyoto restaurant after midnight. That frame became this tee.
I call the things I make from my photos and travels artifacts. A little of a place, made into something you can keep.
