Jewel of Shonan: Enoshima after the lights come on

FROM MY CAMERA ROLL

What made me stop.

Blue through the trees, purple around the tower, and the coast lit up below. Enoshima looks very different after dark.

I kept three views from the lights. The garden around the Sea Candle, the tower from underneath, and the coast from above.

From the ground, the lights fill the frame. From above, you see how small they are against the water and the coastline.

IF YOU’RE HEADING THERE

Plan your visit.

Jewel of Shonan, or Shonan no Hoseki, is Enoshima’s winter illumination event. The announced next season is December 1, 2026–February 28, 2027. The operator is still updating that season’s details, so check the final lighting hours and ticket information before choosing a night. These photographs are from an earlier visit.

Getting there

Use Katase-Enoshima, Enoden Enoshima or Shonan-Enoshima stations, then cross to the island and continue uphill. The operator’s approach estimates are around 20–26 minutes using the paid Escar on the ascent. Build in extra time for queues, walking the stairs and the return to your train.

A walk to try.

Arrive before the main evening rush if you want to look around in daylight. Check the last entry and your train home before climbing the island.

Make the crossing with enough time to climb, buy the right ticket and find your bearings.

  2. Samuel Cocking Garden

Walk the light displays at your own pace, keeping the paths clear for other visitors.

  3. Sea Candle · optional tower visit

Add the observation tower if you want the coastline from above. Tower entry is a separate choice.

  4. The walk back down

Leave time for the stairs and the bridge. The Escar runs uphill only.

Pick the right winter dates

The next announced Jewel of Shonan season runs December 1, 2026–February 28, 2027. The official page says more details will follow and labels its lower sections as previous-season information.

Use that top announcement for the season dates, then check back for confirmed lighting hours before making plans. Shonan Candle, the autumn candle event, is a different event. The winter-light photographs in this log belong to an earlier visit.

Start at ground level

The tower is the obvious thing to look up at, but the garden gives the photographs their color. Blue light sits low among the trees and the strings of lights pull the eye toward the Sea Candle.

Give yourself time to walk through instead of heading straight for the tower queue. Look for a frame that includes the trees, the people and some of the night around the lights.

Choose a night ticket that fits the plan

The current evening garden charge is ¥500 for an adult on event nights. Staying past 5pm triggers that charge even if you entered earlier. Tower admission is separate.

EMot currently lists an adult Sea Candle Set Ticket + Night at ¥1,550. That combines the Escar, tower and evening garden entry. It’s an attraction bundle; your train journey is extra. Check that the ticket is valid for your date and event before buying.

Look back toward the coast

The view from above changes the scale: the lights become part of a coastline rather than the whole scene. The gallery keeps one of those wider night views alongside the tower photographs.

Check weather and service notices before committing to the tower. Keep enough time for the stairs back down and the trip to the station; the evening doesn’t end at the last photograph.
