Things to do
in Kanagawa.
Red gates. A small train toward the sea. Something good under the lanterns.
Kamakura, Enoshima and Yokohama are all in Kanagawa. They feel very different. Here are four photo logs to help you choose a day by the shrines, an afternoon on the coast or a night around the food.
Choose a place
Where to start.
You don’t need to fit all of this into one trip. Choose the place you want to spend time in.
Give it a day / 15 photographsKamakura · Buddha, red gates & small foxes
Start with Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and the streets near Kamakura Station. Make time for Kotoku-in’s Great Buddha in Hase; Sasuke Inari is a quieter detour with an uphill approach. Pick a few stops instead of trying to collect every temple.

An afternoon into evening / 8 photographsEnoshima · the train, the coast & the last light
Follow the Enoden toward the coast, walk the streets by the water and cross the bridge to the island. Add the Sea Candle if you want the view from above. Leave time for the stairs back down; the Escar only runs uphill.

A seasonal night out / 3 photographsJewel of Shonan · a winter evening on the island
The winter illumination changes the garden around the Sea Candle. The next announced season is December 1, 2026–February 28, 2027. Read the event guide for the night-ticket choices, and check the operator’s final lighting hours before booking your trip.

Leave room for the evening / 5 photographsYokohama · harbor air, lanterns & something to eat
Give the waterfront and Chinatown their own visit. Walk toward the lanterns with time to choose a meal. My evening ran late enough to nearly miss the train, so check the kitchen hours and your journey home before settling in.

A full day in Kamakura
Start near the station and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Have lunch, then head toward Hase and the Great Buddha. Add Sasuke Inari only if you have time for the walk and stairs. Check Kotoku-in’s afternoon last entry before choosing the order. The Kamakura guide has the opening hours and fares.
Kamakura and the coast
Choose one main temple stop in the morning, then take the Enoden toward Enoshima for the afternoon. Walk the coast or climb the island, depending on the light, weather and how much walking you want. It becomes a fuller day if you add a tower visit or the winter lights. Give Yokohama its own evening.
Before you head out.
Which station?
Kamakura Station and Hase are useful for the temple walk. Enoden Enoshima, Odakyu Katase-Enoshima and monorail Shonan-Enoshima are different stations; check which one your route uses. The island still involves a bridge crossing and an uphill approach after you leave the train.
What to budget
Public streets and coastal walks can be free. Kotoku-in’s adult entry is ¥300, and the optional statue interior is another ¥50. A Kamakura–Hase Enoden return is ¥400 for an adult. In Enoshima, the current adult Escar-and-tower daytime set is ¥1,100; event-night garden entry is extra. Food and the journey from your starting point are separate.
These prices were checked October 20, 2026. Use the ticket links in each guide to check the latest prices.
What to save for another visit
Yokohama’s waterfront and Chinatown deserve more than a rushed last stop after the coast. The Jewel of Shonan is seasonal, and its night garden ticket is different from an ordinary daytime visit. Check the event dates before making it the reason for your trip.
A few things to know.
Is Kanagawa worth a day trip from Tokyo?
If you want shrines, a coastal walk or an evening around Chinatown, there’s plenty to choose from. Pick one area for a slower visit, and check the train route from where you’re staying. These photo logs focus on Kamakura, Enoshima and Yokohama.
Can I visit Kamakura and Enoshima in one day?
Yes, with a shorter list of stops. The Enoden connects them. Choose one or two main sights in Kamakura, then leave the afternoon for the coast. Trying to fit in every temple, the island climb and a late event makes it a much longer day.
Where are the winter lights in Enoshima?
The Jewel of Shonan is centered around the Sea Candle and Samuel Cocking Garden on the island. The announced next season is December 1, 2026–February 28, 2027. The winter lights guide has the event link and current ticket choices.
Memories
you can wear.
I photographed Astro Boy in a Kyoto restaurant after midnight. That frame became this tee.
I call the things I make from my photos and travels artifacts. A little of a place, made into something you can keep.
